The GroupLoops team developed a proposal that was submitted to a grant competition for student initiated research, which was subsequently chosen for funding. The GroupLoops team built a prototype iPhone application that uses gestures for creating music and requires other to play a song. The team utilized user centered design methods to research how users learn to play music and how collaboration affects learning.
Methods used: Contextual inquiry, interviews and interpretation sessions, individual and consolidated modeling, affinity diagram, personas and scenarios, lo- and hi-fi prototyping, and usability testing.
Gallery is an open source web based photo album organizer used by hundreds of thousands of people around the world. Led team through research, design, and testing process. Project deliverables will be used by the Gallery team and elements of our prototype will be incorporated into a future release.

Our team conducted a usability analysis of Syntax2D and created documentation that will guide the user interface redesign. Syntax2D is an open source software application for urban and architectural spatial analysis developed at the Taubman College of Architecture & Urban Planning at the University of Michigan. Syntax2D features isovist, grid, and axial analysis as well as path analysis and counting features intended to assist with field research.
Methods used: Interviews, generalized transition network, personas and scenarios, competitive / comparative analysis, surveys, heuristic evaluations, usability testing, vocabulary analysis, and visual analysis.
Assistive Media is a small, nonprofit organization in Ann Arbor that makes high-quality audio recordings of articles and essays for anyone with a reading access barrier. Assistive Media faces challenges of keeping the site accessible to blind and visually impaired users, who employ a host of techniques to access web content. Over the years the site has outgrown the capacity of the original site architecture making this an opportune time to consider a redesign. Our team developed a web strategy report focusing on improving data structure and content accessibility.
Methods used: Interviews, credibility analysis, literature review, needs analysis, and personas.
MAIS is a service organization that supports all academic and administrative units and helps University staff utilize the systems to improve the operating efficiency. Our contextual inquiry project analyzed the time and labor and payroll modules, specifically the timekeeping process. MAIS’ goal was to eliminate hard-copy time sheets and our research goal was to analyze all timekeeping methods and generate recommendation that could enable MAIS to achieve their goal.
Methods used: Interviews and interpretation sessions, individual and consolidated modeling (sequence, communication flow, artifact, and physical), root cause analysis, and affinity diagram.
Ruby Toozday is a collaborative Ruby on Rails project part of the Design of Complex Web Sites course at the University of Michigan School of Information. Students in the course developed skins for Ruby Toozday that would be used as the default skin. Mine was chosen as the default skin.
